LSA Projects Ltd are proud to share our signature project of 2017; the Oastler Building at the University of Huddersfield.

The new £28 million landmark building at the historic university will be the new home of law, humanities, and media students. The building houses various lecture and seminar rooms as well as the striking atrium space and large multi-use lecture and performance space.

The central atrium space at the Oastler Building was designed to be a bright and open breakout space for both group working and socialising. By cladding the central lift-core and staircases with linear ribs the architects at AHR were able to provide acoustic control to the large open space without sacrificing the style and elegance of exposed glass and concrete architectural features.

Acoustics are especially important in multi-use auditoriums and lecture theatres; by covering the ceiling in acoustic class B linear ribs in angled rafts across the length of the room the sound will be directed towards the audience and reverberation will be kept to a minimum.

AHR’s choice to leave gaps between the ceiling rafts allows for sound, and projection equipment to be easily installed and updated as required and the integration of strip lighting amongst the ribs highlights the unique beauty of linear ribs.
