Inspiration: Spotlight on Certifications – from Forests to Fire Resistance

At LSA we strive to ensure compliance with key certifications in our business sectors. Modern architectural interiors require modern solutions and ensuring safety and comfort in populated spaces like workplaces, education and leisure facilities should go hand in hand with elegant design.

All of our wall and ceiling cladding products are rigorously tested for their resistance to fire, achieving industry leading results in their product classes. Similarly each product has been formally tested for acoustic performance; with a variety of testing criteria from each module range to give an accurate picture of what can be attained using our systems.

Working predominantly with timber means that sustainable material sourcing is something we take seriously which is why we work with the two biggest certification bodies in the industry; FSC ® and PEFC to support and maintain responsible timber sourcing throughout the supply chain.

In addition to performance testing and sustainability certifications we are proud to share that we have emissions test reports and independently accredited product specific EPDs for our core product ranges for contribution to BREEAM and LEED build status.

FSC ®

LSA are proud to have worked with FSC for more than 6 years; certifying our timber purchases and sales from Gustafs within FSC 100%, FSC Mix, and FSC Controlled Wood categories. Gaining certification to buy and sell FSC material requires an in depth assessment and annual audit process. This covers internal training and sales procedures as well as compliance with core labour requirements and regular due diligence regular checks of the supply chain.

The core goal of the FSC process is the chain of custody of wood products from source to end user where each member link in the chain must be certified by an approved auditing body. This measurable chain of custody allows peach of mind for suppliers, and end users, that the timber they are selling and using has been responsibly and sustainably sourced with a traceable record going back to the primary processing member.

Acoustics
Alongside fire resistance, acoustic performance is one of the key factors we have always looked for when choosing our suppliers. We have worked within the acoustic cladding market for more than 20 years specialising in the supply of perforated and linear systems.

Each of our products is formally tested for their acoustic class across a range of style and finish options as well as each of their recommended mounting styles. This gives is the best overall picture of the range of acoustic performance that can be achieved by our standard product offerings as well as useful data to predict performance for special and bespoke options.

Within standard and recommended panel and linear acoustic cladding styles, the majority of the products we supply can easily achieve Class B acoustic absorption with testing within each group to achieve acoustic Class A.

PEFC
Alongside our solid timber panel supplier, Oranit; LSA have been accredited to buy and sell PEFC certified timber since 2014. The Programme for the Endorsement of Forest Certification promotes sustainable forest management through the certification of forest-based materials as part of an audited chain of custody.

Material claims within the PEFC chain of custody can be passed along in 3 ways: physical separation, percentage method, and credit method. Our supplier, Oranit uses the percentage method to classify their outgoing material claim. All eligible material we purchase from Oranit comes with 70% PEFC Certified claim, meaning of the total product composition is made up of a minimum of 70% traceable material.

Similarly to our position within the FSC Chain of Custody, LSA supply PEFC certified material using the Physical Separation method without any physical possession or alteration of material and are able to pass on the full material claim at the highest possible level.

Fire Resistance
All products supplied by LSA have been tested for their resistance to fire using the three part Euroclass system. This testing system rates the complete product including any proprietary mounting system for the surface spread of flames, smoke production, and production of flaming droplets; over and above older testing methods which only measure the surface spread of flames.

Gustafs panel system (including most perforation styles) has been tested to achieve class A2-s1,d0 for reaction to fire along with products from our metal ceiling supplier Durlum. This classification tested the product systems to have non-combustibility for surface spread of flames, minimal smoke production, and no flaming droplets.

Gustafs Linear Ribs as well as Oranit solid timber linear panels also achieve industry leading fire resistance classifications for fire resistance within the market for timber and veneer based products with limited combustibility, minimal smoke production and no flaming droplets.

If you would like any more information about the products, testing certificates, and accreditations mentioned in this issue please contact Rebecca.

Gustafs

LSA have worked closely with Gustafs of Scandinavia for almost 20 years, supplying their globally renowned Gustafs Panel System and Linear Systems to hundreds of projects across the UK and Ireland on an exclusive basis.

Oranit

Shiluvit by Oranit is a panel based linear system, combining the beauty and simplicity of linear wall and ceiling with the precision and convenience of a systematic panel installation.
