Project: Muirhead Tower

Architect: Associated Architects

Product: Gustafs Panel System®

The Muirhead Tower project involves the £25 million refurbishment on the 1971 Arup Associates landmark at the University of Birmingham. The project has involved the full external and internal remodelling to house the Schools of Social Sciences and Humanities. The refurbished towers accommodate 150 academic offices and 230 post graduates write up spaces. The podium area has been remodelled and includes a 200 seat lecture theatre, café and exhibition space. The basement and lower ground areas have been refurbished to house the University BS5454 Special Collections archive. Externally the core has been sensitively remodelled, the concrete frame has been repaired and the glazing fully replaced.

Ian Barker, the university’s Director of Estates, said: “This project was about restoring one of the university’s most important buildings for the 21st century. The design keeps the façade, as designed by Sir Philip Dowson, but completely transforms the interior to create a space that is functional but also beautiful.”

We used the Gustafs paneling in the café and lecture theatre as we consider this a high quality product. The sharp lines and flexibility of the system enabled us to realize the desired aesthetic.
